Fort Collins Neighborhoods: Local Guide

Fort Collins neighborhoods local guide

You might think there are only about five or 6 Fort Collins neighborhoods, if you are doing research for a move. You’ll definitely find something about historic Old Town with its Victorian homes and walkable downtown. City Park deserves its top billing for its location and beautiful streets. Huntington Hills, Fossil Creek, Bucking Horse..these are all routinely featured on lists with titles like “Best Fort Collins Neighborhoods.”

But “best” should mean best for you. Each Fort Collins neighborhood–and there are about 50 of them!–has its own character. That can be shaped by when it was built, proximity to parks and schools, and the community that lives there. Whether you prioritize a short commute to CSU, easy access to Horsetooth Reservoir, access to our world-class trails, or a tight-knit community feel, Fort Collins has neighborhoods that fit different lifestyles and budgets.

I started the FoCo Free Agent because I was visiting open houses, and wanted to write posts about them. A realtor at an open house suggested I explore and write about Fort Collins neighborhoods instead, and I’m so glad they did! Exploring neighborhoods has turned out to be just as fun as visiting houses, and is so important before you settle somewhere.

During my visits, I try to capture what is unique and wonderful about these communities, even talking to people on the street to learn what they love about their neighborhood. When I return to a neighborhood and notice new things, I update these posts.

When you look for a house online, you’re probably looking at a size and price first, and then things like how close it is to work or the schools you want your kids to go to. My goal is to help you understand the neighborhoods that your search might land you in. My priority is the 90% of homes that are in neighborhoods that don’t always make the “best of” lists.

I’m building guides to well-known areas like Old Town and Midtown, but also detailed profiles of quieter neighborhoods with exceptional value, established character, or unique access to Fort Collins’ trail system. My background as a water scientist means I also pay attention to details like irrigation, landscaping, and water-wise community design—perspectives you won’t find in typical real estate content.
